Hiking Half Dome

One of the most amazing hikes in Yosemite is the Mist Trail to Half Dome. Starting at Happy Isles, the Mist Trail is a 14 to 16 mile uphill trek with an elevation of 4,800 feet to the top of Half Dome. Along the trail, you see outstanding views of Vernal and Nevada Falls, Liberty Cap. From the top of Half Dome you can enjoy panoramic views of Yosemite Valley and the High Sierra. Most hikers take 10 to 12 hours to hike to Half Dome and back, so it's smart to head out around sunrise.

Half Dome Cables

The most exhilarating part of the hike up Half Dome is the ascent up with the cables. Two metal cables help hikers climb the last 400 feet of the rock face to the summit without rock climbing equipment. The Half Dome cables run from Memorial Day Weekend to Columbus Day and are closed in the winter.

  • How long is the hike to Half Dome?

Get on the Mist Trail and hike about 7.1 miles to Half Dome. Pass Vernal and Nevada Falls, and follow the signs to Half Dome. Steel cables assist hikers on the final 400-foot ascent to the top where you'll find jaw-dropping views of Yosemite Valley. The 14.2 mile roundtrip journey takes 10 to 12 hours and you'll climb over 1,400 feet up. Bring a flashlight or head lamp for the way back!
  • What should I know before I go?

The hike and climb to Half Dome is 10 - 12 hours, so leave very early and check the times for sunrise and sunset times before hand. Carry a flashlight or headlamp with good batteries for the trek back in the dark. Wear broken-in boots with good ankle support, gloves for the cables, and bring plenty of water. You should also be prepared with a topographic map and compass. And never leave trash.
